Advancing Inquiry in Middle Mathematics for Rural East Texas:
Promoting Successful Postsecondary Pathways through Mathematical Problem Solving in the Middle Grade
This project "AIMMs" to increase the number of Rural/Small Town East Texas middle grades teachers served through a 2-year collaboration between The University of Texas at Tyler (UTT), Sam Houston State University (SAM), and Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA). The concept of this project is to leverage the intellectual strengths of the partnering individuals and geographical reach of the three institutes in order to have an immediate and lasting impact on the teaching and learning of mathematics in East Texas.
Post Secondary SuccessEast Texas students who were successful in higher level mathematics courses during high school were more likely to complete higher education certificates or degrees. |
Higher Math PathwayA much lower percentage of Rural students in East Texas were enrolled in Algebra I during middle school compared to other more populated parts of the state. |
High School Math TakenLess than 10% of Rural East Texas students completed a mathematics course higher than Pre-Calculus during high school. |
We believe our program contributes to the mission of each University collaborating in this project. Our program will seek to add to the body of knowledge surrounding the teaching and learning of mathematics. Specifically, we wish to better understand the teaching and learning of mathematics in rural schools. We also seek to provide outreach to these rural areas through service. These services are administered as a part of our program.
Our teachers engage in rich problem solving tasks. |
